Overhead cable
Overhead cable: Overhead cable (full name overhead insulated cable) is an overhead conductor equipped with an insulating layer and protective outer skin, manufactured using a production process similar to that of cross-linked cables. It is a new transmission method that lies between overhead conductors and underground cables. Overhead cables are all single-core and can be divided into different structures such as hard aluminum wire structure, hard drawn copper wire structure, aluminum alloy wire structure, steel core or aluminum alloy core support structure, and self-supporting three-core twisted structure (the wire core can be hard aluminum or hard copper wire). They have main characteristics such as high reliability of power supply, good safety of power supply, convenient installation and maintenance, and reasonable economy. Their main technical parameters include weather resistance, insulation level, and internal and external semi-conductive shielding layers. Overhead cables are widely used in power transmission applications both domestically and internationally.
Generally, overhead cables are all single-core and can be divided into different structures such as hard aluminum wire structure, hard drawn copper wire structure, aluminum alloy wire structure, steel core or aluminum alloy core support structure, and self-supporting three-core twisted structure (the wire core can be hard aluminum or hard copper wire).
The hard aluminum wire structure is lightweight, has moderate tensile strength, is easy to bend, convenient for installation, and has low engineering costs, making it suitable for installation on existing towers. This type is commonly used in renovation or new construction projects.
The hard drawn copper wire structure is heavier but has high tensile strength and strong resistance to external forces, allowing the cable to continue conducting electricity even if the tower breaks. The aluminum alloy wire structure is lightweight and has high tensile strength, mainly used in large span tower systems with spans of 100m.
The steel core or aluminum alloy core support structure is generally used in 35kV voltage systems, with larger spans. It uses square insulating components to separate the supporting wire (bare wire) from the three insulated phase wires. The supporting wire can also serve as a lightning protection wire, with the main advantage being a small arc sag, with the arc weight being only about 2.4% of the span.
The self-supporting three-core twisted structure is used in systems with medium spans. The disadvantage of this type of cable is that the manufacturing length of the three-core cable is shorter than that of the single-core, resulting in more joints, and it has an external semi-conductive shielding layer. At the end of the cable, a terminal head or stress cone structure must be installed like a regular cable.
