Cross-linked cable

Cross-linked cable: XLPE (cross-linked) cable material is a type of polyethylene that contains organic peroxides such as DCP (dicumyl peroxide). This peroxide undergoes a chemical reaction with polyethylene under high temperature, high pressure, and inert gas environments, transforming thermoplastic polyethylene into thermosetting (elastomer) polyethylene, namely XLPE. XLPE cables have excellent electrical performance. The dielectric loss is lower than that of paper insulation and PVC insulation, and the capacitance of XLPE cables is also low. Therefore, it can reduce charging current and ground fault current even without an effective star grounding system. Another advantage of XLPE cables is their ease of installation. XLPE cables have a smaller bending radius, are lighter than other similar cables, and have simpler terminal processing. Since XLPE cables do not contain oil, there is no need to consider the routing when laying XLPE cables, and there is no situation where installation is impossible due to oil leakage. The excellent aging resistance and strong heat deformation resistance allow cross-linked polyethylene cables to carry large currents under normal operating temperatures (90°C), short-term faults (130°C), and short-circuit conditions (250°C).

The long-term working temperature of PVC insulated cables is only 70°C, while the long-term allowable working temperature of cross-linked polyethylene insulated cables can reach 90°C. At 130°C, it maintains its elastic state, and compared to PVC insulated cables of the same cross-section, its current-carrying capacity can be increased by about 25%. Therefore, in practical applications, cross-linked polyethylene insulated cables with a lower cross-section can replace PVC insulated cables. The specific gravity of cross-linked polyethylene insulation is 1.2g/cm3, while that of PVC insulation is 1.35g/cm3. Due to the superior comprehensive performance of XLPE insulation compared to PVC insulation, the thickness of cross-linked polyethylene insulation allowed by national standards (GB/T12706-2002) is thinner than that of PVC insulation. Therefore, cross-linked polyethylene insulated cables are lighter, have a smaller diameter, are easy to install, and have simple accessory joints, which leads to their widespread use.
